Campus wayfinding for people who arrive once a year
A campus has two populations with opposite needs. Students learn the place in a fortnight and never look at a sign again. Everyone else, which means applicants, open day visitors, parents, conference delegates and contractors, arrives once and needs to find one specific room in a building they have never seen.
Universities are also the building type most likely to have an interactive campus map already, and most likely for it to stop at the building outline. It gets a visitor to the right door and abandons them there, which is the point at which finding a seminar room on the third floor actually becomes hard.
The peaks make it worse. Open days, results day, freshers week and graduation put thousands of first-time visitors through the campus in a single morning, all asking the same questions of whichever staff member is closest.
Codes on existing signage let the outdoor campus map hand over to an indoor one at the building entrance, so a visitor can keep going without stopping to ask.
Common questions
How is this different from our existing campus map?
Most campus maps stop at the building outline. This adds the inside: lecture theatres, seminar rooms, labs and offices, searchable by name or room code, with a code at each building entrance so visitors can pick up indoors where the outdoor map left off.
Can different departments manage their own buildings?
Yes. Each building can be managed separately by whoever knows it, while the search still works across the whole campus, so a visitor does not need to know which department owns which room.
Does it work for open days and one-off events?
It suits them particularly well, because you can add temporary markers for registration desks, talks and refreshment points, then remove them the following week without reprinting anything.
