Warehouse Signage: Aisle, Rack and Dock Labelling
Warehouse signage gets judged by the wrong people. The permanent team learns the building in a week and stops reading it entirely, so the scheme looks fine right up until you hire twenty agency pickers for peak.
What warehouse signage has to do
Three audiences, three different jobs.
Pickers need to find a location fast and confirm they are in the right one, hundreds of times a shift. Drivers need to find a dock door from a yard entrance, usually once, often at night, sometimes without much English. Visitors and engineers need to reach an office or a machine without walking through the middle of an operating aisle.
Most sites sign the first job well, because it directly affects pick rate, and the other two barely at all. That is why the supervisor's day keeps getting interrupted.
Aisle and bay numbering that scales
The scheme you choose at fit-out is the one you live with, so leave room in it.
Number aisles odd on one side and even on the other if you run a two-sided pick face, and keep the direction of travel consistent across the whole building. Leave gaps in the sequence. A site numbered 1 to 20 with no spare numbers forces you into 12A when you add a run, and 12A will be mis-keyed for the rest of the building's life.
Hang aisle markers high enough to be read over racking from the end of the run, and repeat them at the midpoint on long aisles so somebody entering from a cross-aisle can orient without walking to the end.
Rack, level and bay labels
Location labels are read from a truck, at speed, often at height, and the failure mode is a mis-pick rather than a wrong turn.
Keep the format identical everywhere and make each element visually distinct, so aisle, bay and level cannot be confused when someone reads them aloud over a radio. Size the characters for the distance they are actually read from, which for upper levels means considerably larger than the ground-level labels people specify by eye.
Put the label where the eye lands rather than where it is convenient to fix. Beam-mounted labels sitting below the pick face beat labels on the upright that a pallet hides the moment the location is full.
Dock doors and the driver's route
Dock numbering is where the wayfinding cost shows up as dwell time.
Number doors so the sequence is obvious from the yard, not from inside the building. A driver approaching from the gate should be able to see which end the numbers start at and which way they run, without guessing and committing an artic to a turn it cannot undo.
Sign the route as well as the destination: gatehouse, check-in, waiting area, driver welfare, and then the doors. A driver who knows where to wait is a driver who is not blocking the yard while somebody finds them.
It is also worth being honest about who reads these signs. If a meaningful share of your drivers work across several operators and several countries, a plan they can look at in the cab beats a sign with your internal terminology on it.
Keeping the scheme right after a re-slot
Warehouses change layout more often than almost any other building type, and the signage rarely keeps up.
A seasonal re-slot, a new racking run or a change of pick face leaves physical labels that are correct and directional signage that is quietly wrong. The people who notice first are the agency staff, and they resolve it by asking somebody, which is exactly the cost the signage was supposed to remove.
Split the scheme the way you would split any other. Location labels are permanent and belong on the rack. Everything above that level, meaning which zone holds what, where goods-in sits this quarter, which dock a carrier uses, is better held somewhere you can edit. A code at the entrance and at each aisle head opens a site plan on a phone, and updating it after a re-slot takes minutes.
