QRCodeMaps vs. Google Indoor Maps: Who Owns the Visitor Experience?

If you operate a large venue — a shopping mall, an airport, a museum, a stadium — Google has offered to put your floor plans inside the Google Maps app for over a decade. It is free, and Google has done a lot of the heavy lifting. So why would you pay for QRCodeMaps instead? The answer comes down to who owns the visitor experience, and what you get to learn from it. What Google Indoor Maps offers

Google Indoor Maps is a free partner program for venue operators. Eligible categories include shopping malls, airports, train stations, stadiums, museums, conference centers, and large public buildings. You submit floor plans as PDF, image, or IMDF files, along with georeferencing data (so the plan aligns with the real-world latitude and longitude of the building) and proof of usage rights.

After Google reviews and approves the submission, your floor plans appear in the Google Maps app on Android and iOS. Visitors who search for your venue inside Google Maps can switch into the floor plan view, scroll between floors, and see labeled rooms and amenities. There is no cost to the venue and no integration work beyond preparing the floor plan files.

The legacy Floor Plan Marker Android app, which once allowed venue staff to record fingerprinting walks for blue-dot positioning, is no longer actively maintained as a standalone tool. New submissions today go through the partner program directly.

What you give up

The experience lives inside Google Maps, not on your own site or your own signage. Branding is Google. The map renders the way Google decides to render it. The list of features that show up is Google's editorial decision, not yours.

You have no analytics. Google does not tell venue partners which rooms visitors searched for, how often the floor plan was viewed, or which search terms returned nothing. Whatever a visitor learns by tapping around your venue inside Google Maps, you do not get to learn alongside them.

You also have very limited freedom over what gets a marker. Google's data model is built around named rooms and standard amenity types. The custom markers that often matter most in real wayfinding — "ice machine on third floor", "smoking area outside east entrance", "baby change room", "prayer room", "the lab where you actually pick up results" — either do not fit the schema or get filtered out at review time.

The visitor-data question

When a visitor uses Google Maps to find their way around your venue, every search and every interaction goes to Google. None of it comes back to you.

With QRCodeMaps, the analytics dashboard shows you scan counts per QR code, search terms per session, popular destinations, and most importantly the zero-result searches — the moments where a visitor tried to find something and your map could not help. That last category is the single most useful data point in operational wayfinding. Every zero-result search is a real visitor who needed something they could not find. Buildings change. Stores open and close. Departments move. Conference rooms get renamed. A wayfinding system has to keep up.

With Google Indoor Maps, every change means re-submitting the updated floor plan, waiting for Google to validate and review it, and waiting for the new version to roll out across devices. That process is typically measured in weeks. For a busy mall or hospital, where signage has to be accurate today, this update cadence is often the dealbreaker.

With QRCodeMaps, an operator renames a marker online and the change is live for the next person who scans. The QR code on the wall stays the same — it always points to the latest map. That immediacy matches the way malls and large venues actually need to manage wayfinding.

When Google Indoor Maps is the right call

Google Indoor Maps is a good fit when three things are true. You operate a very large public venue — a major airport, a flagship mall, a national museum — where being findable inside the Google Maps app is itself valuable. You already have CAD-quality floor plans and the operations capacity to maintain them. And the kind of wayfinding you need is essentially "directory" rather than "directional" — visitors know your venue exists, they want to see where stores or gates are, and the static experience inside Google Maps is enough.

In that scenario, the price is unbeatable (free) and the reach is global. There is no reason not to be in Google Indoor Maps if you qualify and the operational load is acceptable.

When QR-code wayfinding is the right call

QRCodeMaps is the right call when you want to direct visitors actively, learn from how they search, and update the map in real time. That covers almost every operational wayfinding scenario: hospitals directing patients to the right department, hotels guiding guests to the pool, conference venues moving attendees between sessions, offices welcoming visitors at reception, warehouses orienting new staff and delivery drivers.

It also covers everyone who is not eligible for Google Indoor Maps in the first place — most mid-sized buildings, private facilities, recently-renovated venues without CAD floor plans, and any building where the wayfinding job is operational rather than discovery.
